The government has commended the Higher Learning Students Supporting
Fund Organisation (HLSSF) for providing an alternative source of fund
for higher learning students.
Higher Education Students Loans Board
(HESLB) assistant Director for Information, Education and Communication
Cosmas Mwaisobwa sounded the commendation in an interview yesterday.
He said the Fund would help many students
to access grants and loans; and thereby support the country’s education
sector development.
HLSSF is an independent organisation
registered to support higher learning institution students with grants
for funding higher learning studies within the country and abroad.
According to him, Tanzania’s education
system has grown drastically from relatively simple one shortly after
independence to a complex one after about half a decade of the country’s
independence.
The system, he explained, has grown from
only one institution of higher learning in 1961 to more than 140
tertiary institutions recently, out of which about 20 are higher
educational institutions.
Hellen Muze, a first year student at the
Institute of Finance Management expressed in separate interview optimism
that the organisation would help them acquire grants on time so that
they could pay for tuition fees, accommodation and other expenses.
Meanwhile, HLSSF director general
Respicius Kamuhabwa said his institution would only offer grants and
loans to qualified students.
